NOTEWORTHY MEDIA CONSUMPTION THREAD - 2025 EDITION:

Got a new PC at the end of 2024 to stay current with game releases. Replayed Portal (looks beautiful in RTX) and then got spirited away indefinitely by Marvel Rivals.
It's so funny (but also a tad frustrating) that home media distributors could quite easily just copy/paste the best promotional artwork of all time for their covers and be done but they instead decide to go with the most fuckass Instagram filter screenshot shit instead.

I watched two coworker recommended movies on the weekend.
One I'd seen before and was enjoyable to revisit. The other was one of the worst films I've ever seen.
It's going to cause a big rift when they ask me which one I liked more. There will be judgement.

The casting director of the Super Mario movies is such an unhinged individual, you kind of have to sit back and admire the untethered madness of the whole enterprise.

SPOOKY MOVIE #5 - CUCKOO

How was Dan Stevens the only person trying to make this boring movie interesting?

SPOOKY MOVIE #4 - ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES

AKA The Ballad of Debbie Jalinksy.

SPOOKY MOVIE #3 - POSSESSION

A once in a lifetime film. Tentacle porn, apocalyptic imagery, liminal spaces, doppelgangers aplenty. One hell of a date movie. Watch it on high volume so your neighbours think you've finally lost it.

Nothing prepared me for how much sharting is in The Exorcist novel.

SPOOKY MOVIE #2 - The Mist

The black and white directors cut is an unbelievable improvement. It's funny this being a throwback creature feature because the parallels to modern America are startling. Effects are still the weakest part, but easy to tolerate. Ending still slaps.

ITS SPOOKY SEASON. Time to watch a whole bunch of witches, ghouls, psychopaths, demons and draculas.

Film #1:
Wolf Man - 2025

What a terrible way to start the horror marathon. Jesus what a clunker.

I had actually started to forget that movies could be this good. Evokes an excellence I thought to be ancient history. Terminator 2 if you replaced Skynet with Trump. In-fucking-credible.

Best comedy film of the decade. Prove me wrong.

I just my first ever playthrough of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Kojima will never beat the style over substance accusations. This has some of the worst stealth level design and the most boring boss fight mechanics I've ever played. Cool cutscenes though.

WEAPONS is my film of the year so far. Hands down best ending I've seen in a long time. If anyone can finally crack Resident Evil in Hollywood, its going to be Cregger. Godspeed.

PREDICTION: You will go your whole life without ever meeting anyone who has seen this movie, but it will also be the 4th highest grossing animated movie of all time.

Lucasfilm to follow up the critically hailed ANDOR with new series: ENDOR. Kicks off with a political rift between the golden-god worshippers and the progressive Ewok factions who seek to harness the forest resources. Ends with the Empire's annexation of the moon. 24 eps, stars Jack Quaid as Chirpa.

Me: I have soooo many new TV shows I need to check out, the backlog is positively mountainous.

Also me: Should I rewatch Star Trek from the beginning? Or the Marvel Netflix run? Should I get into Doctor Who?

Third time's the charm. I finally consider myself a fan of Coppola's DRACULA in all its blood-drunk, psychosexual Gothic delirium. Full of absolutely crazy production choices; gorgeous weirdo cinema that can only be the work of a true madman. Keanu's British accent is still endlessly fascinating. 🎥

2024 was a stellar year for genre filmmaking and original ideas. Here's my top recommendations, and lets continue supporting REAL movies and not let streaming services AI-generate the industry into total oblivion. 🎥🎞️🎬

Stephen King is so very good at writing prose and creating a landscape full of wretched characters, but his obsession with boyhood nostalgia and vintage horror tropes hold everything hostage. Being his second novel, lots of King's motifs make their debut here, along with many of his flaws too. 🪐📚

Absolutely crazy to me that a new feature film installment of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings universe comes out this week and not a single person cares. Proof that animation for adults still has a LONG way to go.

Thoroughly enjoyed SOLO LEVELLING's first season. Nice, juicy mystery-box power fantasy with some pure hits of anime nonsense. Kind of like if instead of the life-sim of The Matrix, Neo was awakened in an Earth Defense Force game. Good series if you like peeling back the layers of lore. Bring on S2.

I still can't believe CROC - LEGEND OF THE GOBBOS got such a lavish resurrection 27 years after its release. Even at 12 years old I knew this game was the most mundane mascot platformer I would ever play and that it would be forever lost to obscurity. I was profoundly wrong.

Saw an advanced screening of HERETIC. Atheism and intelligensia dressed up as the boogeyman. Certainly fun at times, when its not balancing between soapbox and puzzlebox, never quite committing to either. Hugh Grant clearly having an absolute ball, despite it all.
