Upcoming concerts include Nigerian American singer-songwriter Annahstasia, queer country-music artist Fancy Hagood, lesbian alternative-pop musician Rio Romeo and the transgender, nonbinary singer-songwriter NoSo. Cafe Du Nord employees said the venue’s allure can also be attributed to the fact that the venue is a launching pad for artists who are on major national tours or performing along the West Coast. Prior performers include Blink 182, Bon Iver and Janelle Monae. Cafe Du Nord has also given visitors new ways to experience some of their favorite artists. In honor of Lady Gaga’s string of shows at Chase Center in Mission Bay next month, Cafe Du Nord is hosting a dance party to celebrate her discography. Promoters have also held other events for fans of artists such as Britney Spears, Madonna and Beyoncé. No matter the event, MacNiven said his favorite part of any night is “having 300 people ready to go crazy.”

Is San Francisco’s Music Industry ‘So Back’? It Depends Who You Ask With artists scraping by, the economy of managers and booking agents around them shrinks as well, La Doña pointed out. Small venues, too, are struggling. Waz, who books shows at Kilowatt in the Mission District, said he’s seen at least 10 close in the past two years. A possible solution? Government subsidies, philanthropic funding and corporate sponsorship for artists and venues, several speakers suggested. Waz shouted out the Market Street Arts program, a collaboration between the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and a private foundation, as a model for paying artists to perform at free community events, as well as recent city-funded SF Live concerts in parks and public spaces. From "Derry Girls" to "Say Nothing", the last few years have seen a flurry of popular media defining to new audiences the complex history and culture of Ireland, from the Gaeltacht to the Troubles. Folk singer-songwriter John Francis Flynn is taking his own spin on the matter: he gave up a gig playing stereotypical Irish music on a Disney cruise ship to tell the true story of his native country through sonorous compositions tackling themes of national identity and anti-capitalism. Growing up in the suburbs of Dublin, Flynn learnt traditional instruments like the flute and tin whistle; he now incorporates his folksy roots with electronica and post-punk to create a unique Irish musical style.

But their set’s sweetest moment was certainly the very calm, very safe mosh pit — delighted 20-somethings jumped around, surprising the singer onstage.
