I agree - look at gay marriage - for years activists got out and did the work for candidates that didn't support equality for them. But as participants, they could push their message and ideas forward. You don't do that by just sitting out and taking your ball and going home.

I feel it bears repeating - you can have more influence joining a group you don't always agree with 100% and bringing them around to your position (IE Gay Marriage) much more than saying "Well, since I disagree with you on this and since you won't change, I won't participate"
