Masks of Mexico (Ruth D. Lechuga & Chloë Sayer)
Moro or archareo (also alchareo) from the dance of los archareos performed in the Mestizo town of San Martín de las Pirámides, Mexico State. The mask-maker, Juan Gómez Alcibar, has moulded and painted a felt hat; the mask is attached to sheepskin to simulate hair. Moro (mask) with a movable jaw and eyelashes of real hair, from la danza de media luna (Dance of the Crescent Moon) performed in the Mestizo town of San Felipe Tejalpa, Mexico State. Moro of a male character, with a movable jaw, from the dance of moros y cristianos in Mexico State. Moro from Cuetzalan, Puebla. This mask was carved by Carlos Bazán for the dance of los santiagueros performed in Nahua communities throughout the region. Moro from the dance of moros y cristianos performed throughout the state of Guerrero. Ermitaño (Hermit) from the pastorela in Suchitlán, Colima. The mask-carver, Herminio Candelario, has added strands of ixtle fibre. Viejo for Caraval and Day of the Dead ceremonies near Huejutla de Reyes, Hidalgo. Viejo from the dance of los tejorones during Carnaval in the coastal Mixtec community of San Juan Colorado, Oaxaca. Abnormally small masks such as these are used in conjunction with a paliacate (kerchief) which covers the lower half of the face. Pascola (Old Man of the Feast) from the region of El Fuerte, Sinaloa. Made from wood, paint and cattlehair, such masks are worn by Mayo dancers during Holy Week, weddings and Day of the Dead ceremonies.
