Now that the photoperiod (the amount of time each day that it is light or dark) is shifting, it’s time to see our earliest emerging butterfly around town—the Mourning Cloak butterfly! One of the longest living butterflies, it can live for nearly a year in adult form.

#NationalSerpentDay is slithering our way this week!

We have over 20 species of snakes of all sizes sharing the Duke City with us. By far the most commonly spotted is the gopher or bull snake, who is completely harmless to humans but helps reduce pest rodent populations.

While we do have beavers here in the City, you are far more likely to spot their smaller cousins, the muskrat. In their native range, they are well known to be a valuable food source for all sorts of predatory animals, ranging from owls to coyote.

Despite there being no seas here, you can see a gull this time of year in the Duke City! These numbers would have been unheard of in the late 19th century due to hunting, but they are now estimated to be the 3rd most populous bird worldwide at approximately 1.2 billon birds!

Unlike the vast majority of adult butterflies that seem to dance from flower to flower, Arizona Sisters prefer the less glamorous hangouts of mud, tree sap, rotting fruit and even carrion in search of a meal, making them one of the few species of adult butterflies that aren’t actually pollinators!

As we get ready to walk into the #NewYear, many people have a tradition walking around the neighborhood to reflect. One of the most abundant number of feet you’ll find anywhere in the city is on the Desert Millipede.
