89) Mobile Police Patlabor 2: The Movie

Another Oshii masterclass, has one of the most stunning audiovisual and memorable opening sequences in a movie, one of the most thought-provoking experiences of the year, Nagumo is truly a great character, and this is Patlabor's direction at its best

88) Patlabor: The Movie

Takes a bit to get going but it's really gripping when it hits its stride, this is where I started to really love Gotou's characterisation, Noa and Asuma's dynamic is adorable, and holy shit is Noa absolutely badass in that climax, shoutout Noa with a shotgun

87) Blame!

A fascinating sci-fi action manga, with some of the greatest mechanical body horror ive seen, definitely a little strange to follow at points and im still not sure how i see every character yet, but it was a rollercoaster of an experience and very enjoyable to binge

86) Pictures at an Exhibition

Generally, I like Tezuka stuff but the stories in this one are pretty hit and miss, I liked a couple but most of them weren't very compelling, although i liked the visual variance in depiction, the ending message on civilisation advancement was interesting ig

85) The Scribbling Kitten

Prequel to Kitty's Studio, mostly about a cat whose graffiti drawings come to life and animate in neat little ways, the animation is more limited being a 50s short film but still was a unique watch

84) Kitty's Studio

This one was cute but not a whole lot to say here, I like the designs of the cats and the concept of a cat director with mice actors is fun enough to work with, but its just okay

83) Little Jumbo

Not really into musicals, and this short film isn't really an exception unfortunately, colours + background art is nice and the story it tells is sweet but wasn't really holding my attention much, jumbo is cute though

82) 1001 Nights

Amano's style is always cool, mostly a really pretty short film, the CG was kinda weak however compared to other 90s works in how it blends with the rest of the art, the score is quite intense and fitting for the fever dream story, overall, a unique piece of experimental art

81) Oruorane the Cat Player

Nothing crazy but a really fun and whimsical silly cat story about a strange looking wizard guy and his musical cats, has pretty art and backgrounds, and the final aspect of it was well executed with the small bit of conflict in the story

80) Mobile Police Patlabor (OVA)

Had an interesting variety with its tone and episode subject matter which i did not expect tbh but it was fun, Noa is adorable and her enthusiasm for the labors is endearing, I've heard great things about the 2nd movie so can't wait for that

79) Kazoku Dekki

I appreciate puppet or stop motion animation, and this one is really fun, i like the variety of styles we get per episode, 2 and 4 were my favourites, 2 was very whimsical and 4 had the best colour application for me, 3 was great in atmosphere with a pretty final shot

78) Pendulum

Another short, this one was touching, and I liked how it conveyed how a relationship evolves through the passage of time and the way we go through cycles emotionally on how time never stopping feels to us, neatly conveyed through the pendulum swinging always

cool little short with some beautiful visuals and interesting direction, definitely ends though as I was getting into its world it crafted unfortunately

76) Le Portrait de Petit Cossette

Must watch for any Shinbo fan I think, just a very unique piece of gothic horror that i really enjoyed going through, the OST is excellent as well, if you're a Monogatari fan especially you'll see the directorial DNA here in a way that will feel very familiar

75) Smiling Friends Season 2

First few episodes were solid but nothing amazing so i thought the novelty was kinda wearing off, but the last few eps of s2 really were bangers, so overall about as good as s1, just the quality is flipped to the 2nd half being the best half for me

74) Princess Tutu (part rewatch)

Masterful, just a brilliant story about stories, I loved every main character in this to bits and even side characters like Edel moved me greatly, if I needed to show someone why stories are able to mean so much to me, I'd simply show them this

73) Spring and Chaos

A brilliant tribute to Miyazawa, this movie had one of the most unique examples of how the medium can be used, i loved the depiction of the journey of Miyazawas life, and the dynamic with Toshi was quite touching, highly recommend this one as its underwatched

72) Gunsmith Cats

Whimsyful and a ton of fun, Minnie and Rally are great leads to follow for their chemistry and the silly situations they get in, OST is memorable, wish it was longer but that's my only real complaint, final antagonist had impact, but I wish we got to know them more

71) Smiling Friends - Season 1

Including the pilot, good intro season tbh, a few episodes i didnt like here and there but this show is consistently funny and leads up to its big punchlines incredibly well, charlie and pim are just a great duo for stupid situations to occur with

70) Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc

They did my girl Reze justice!!! The music was incredible, love the style shift of direction for this movie, whether the atmosphere was creepy, emotional or bombastic it all hit, only complaint was a lil bit of messy action but overall just awesome

69) Daicon IV Opening Animation

This one I liked a bit more than III, some cool choreography and all the easter eggs / references are pretty neat, definitely an iconic animation short, so feels good to have seen it

68) Daicon III Opening Animation

Cool little part of animation history, definitely worth checking out all things considered, not much to say here other than i liked it and im glad to be able to go back and watch these with the availability we have nowadays to various older works in the medium

67) Picnic

One of the toughest watches in recent memory, but incredibly sincere, thoughtful and understanding of people who go through hellish circumstances, and how poorly they are treated for their trauma in some asylums, i love how much empathy this film has despite how heartbreaking it was
October 24, 2025 at 1:42 AM
66) The Sky Crawlers

OST, atmosphere and directing is all brilliant, one of my favourite Oshii works now, the vibes are immaculate and there are no punches pulled with the dread from the roles the characters follow or the existentialism they suffer with, a movie of hope regardless

65) One Battle After Another

film of vapid politics, PTA just did a poor job of portraying black revolutionaries (awful when one is inspired by Shakur too), Del Toros character one of the few things I liked as his stuff repped the Latino community well, Leo as a sad dad is fun ig
