Thoroughly enjoyed judging a RUSI debate last night. The question was whether the current wave of tech innovation resulted in revolutionary change in war at sea.

Great speakers from industry, NATO, academia and the navy.

I won't divulge the result. But what do you think?

Last week I had the privilege of visiting the Italian Navy’s Centre for Military Maritime Studies in Venice. It was a superb opportunity to discuss 🇬🇧 🇮🇹 research agendas and future cooperation.

It was a pleasure to speak to the Oxford University Strategic Studies Group at All Souls College last night.

There is a lot happening on the international stage at the moment and seapower has a role to play in statecraft.

Some challenging questions which really made me think.

I've had a close relationship with King's College London for years. MA, PhD, DefAC Directing Staff, in my current job and more.

And so I was thrilled and delighted to be offered a Visiting Professorship in the world renowned War Studies department. Of course I accepted!

Picked up the pass today.

A great charity shop find. A wonderful atlas from 1935.

The world shipping routes map looks remarkably familiar despite 90 years separation and technological changes. Geography matters.

Flicking through Geoffrey Till's *Seapower* for the first time in ages. This little diagram says a lot.

Finally, I asked AI for an image of multi-domain integration, just to be as joint as I could be.

It came up with the same old crap I've seen in every presentation for the past 20 years.

Oh well, maybe it is true after all.

What about protection of commercial shipping through a maritime chokepoint?

Yep, drones again. Aerial escorts this time. No multi-billion dollar warships.
November 27, 2024 at 6:51 PM
So then I asked AI for an image of how we should protect subsea cables.

Surprise surprise! It's underwater drones again. Friendly looking ones. Looks like they will have to be dispersed along the length of the cables for persistent monitoring.

So I asked AI for an image of subsea cable vulnerability. It came up with this.

I think it is an evil looking underwater drone cutting cables. No Chinese ships dragging anchors. No divers either.

So I asked AI to show me more 21st century seapower. Let's get contemporary.

A bit different. Still lots of kit. Drones. Flashy lights. No carriers (interesting).

But what about subsea cables and stuff?

So, it is all about Artificial Intelligence.

Being bored just now, I started dreaming of the sea (as we all do). I asked AI to create an image of seapower.

Cool. Lots of kit. Carriers. All close together. It's an image that many would have of seapower. But it isn't true.🧵
