Huge animals made in wood, steel or fibreglass, these were beautiful works of art for children – made to be touched, climbed on, dived into and slid through.

The Poole animals were the first that Hand created and are among very few known to survive. Are you aware of any more? If so, get in touch!

For decades they were a cherished part of Poole’s public art until being removed from the centre’s forecourt in 1997 and placed into storage. Donated to @poolemuseum.bsky.social in 2023, they’ve now finally re-emerged and gone back on permanent display at the museum.

Recent rejections from DCMS include Bath Fire Station (1938-9), Shoreditch Fire Station (1963-4), BBC Brookmans Park Transmitting Station (1928-9) and, we can reveal for the first time, Stansted Airport (Foster + Partners, 1991) - one of the finest achievements of the High-Tech movement.

In the past few years, the Barbican has also been the location for a music video by Harry Styles and featured in Star Wars Andor and 007 Quantum of Solace. This might be the oddest one yet.
