We used the case to illustrate a bigger problem of how well-intentioned Western people in power can sideline Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies, but I understand the concern that it is less impactful than, e.g., activism against the seal trade. Thank you for engaging with our piece, though!

He also said: “We eat whatever the forests give us, whatever the rivers give us. Some days we eat fish; other days we eat nuts and açaí. This is also sustainable.”

it’s all in our article. [2/2]

I’d recommend you having a second read to the article. We show how Amazonian chef Saulo Jennings says that the request of a vegan menu, when pirarucu is available “was like asking Iron Maiden to play jazz” as he told NYT. [1/2]

I am not saying I am against veganism or it shouldn’t be promoted. The problem is when it is imposed onto Indigenous Peoples.

The Earthshot Prize is actually taking place in Brazil tomorrow. The leading causes of deforestation have nothing to do with Indigenous Peoples, who have been taking care of their land for centuries, but with Western interests. Veganism, in this context, is a Western solution to a Western problem.

The Earthshot Prize asking for a vegan menu is their idea of sustainability, which, as Indigenous chef Jennings said, does not match with his own idea of "sustainability" because he lives more attuned with the seasonal availability of food, so if it's time for fish, he wants to use it [2/2]

Hi! I wrote the article with my co-authors. Yes, the fish almost went extinct, but not because of Indigenous Peoples. Also, we are not saying that the vegan menu is food colonialism. We are saying that imposing Western ideas of sustainability onto Indigenous Peoples is colonial [1/2]
