I once asked a guy in his early twenties why he shaved his underarms and legs and he responded “Well society expects women to do it, so it seems fair.” Astonishing that the fix to unfair expectations on women would be to just add more expectations to men.

Yeah I'm a software dev with some of that tism - optics and framing are not my strong suite. But that is fair!

Hopefully we can manage something!

To be clear I should be taxed more to pay for that palliative care.
April 25, 2025 at 7:58 PM
To be clear this is horrible and awful but I wanted to make fun of finger lakes wine.
April 25, 2025 at 7:57 PM
And because climate change is gonna change all of the worlds growing regions, the finger lakes will actually have good wine!

I gotta do something with this privilege. Just let me keep an occasional bottle of bubbles.

I've seen that housing and it was um.... I wouldn't wanna live there? It was free but not very nice.

Fwiw, my town is doing cool shit: www.cityofrochester.gov/departments/...

I'd argue though that there is a material shortage of *quality* housing. No one should have to live in a shit hole that is falling apart. We fix that by replacing housing stock!
April 25, 2025 at 7:51 PM
yea. 100 percent
April 25, 2025 at 7:50 PM
I go to the meetings to tell the NIMBYs to fuck off. Honestly it's one of the only things that gives me life now.
April 25, 2025 at 7:49 PM
But I think it's important to keep context - living alone is wildly new and in almost every country in the world seen as a luxury. I think we should pursue a society in which it's feasible, but let's be honest that this is a new thing for humans to want as a minimum.
April 25, 2025 at 7:49 PM
Yeah - and I agree housing is too expensive. We should be building more of it in anyway that we can. You know who hates more housing? Existing landlord! We should do everything we can to reduce costs and increase what folks make by fighting for the rights of workers.
April 25, 2025 at 7:47 PM
I believe in more welfare! Tax me more! Give it other people!
April 25, 2025 at 7:42 PM
Fair enough
April 25, 2025 at 7:37 PM
Don't love this analysis - both rent and transport seem very very high. I spend less than that in a city of similar CoL to NC. Seems like it's based on owning a new car and living alone in a 1 bedroom? Seems like having a roommate and a used car are closer to what we might call a living wage.

I'm unsure tbh - but either we vote or we grab a gun. I've been helping my queer friends learn firearm safety recently

Def don't think folks just be grateful for subsisting. But I think this dodges the question of what the minimum we want to set in society for life.
April 25, 2025 at 7:32 PM
Yeah this is the scary thing that I will very much fully agree on.
Revolution tonight?
April 25, 2025 at 7:29 PM
Yea I like the welfare state. It's good. We need more of it
April 25, 2025 at 7:28 PM
This is manipulative and condescending.
April 25, 2025 at 7:27 PM
I never said that. There is a lot of suffering that exists outside of folks control. I think we should tax people like me a lot more and redistribute that money to folks who are suffering. I vote that way and will continue to do so.
April 25, 2025 at 7:26 PM
Taking care of an extra human is like. By it's nature more expensive?
April 25, 2025 at 7:24 PM
As a gay man, I can promise you that children are not required to live or be happy. They are a choice - an expensive choice.
