every bit as lush as i expected an angela carter adaptation to be; it helps that she co-wrote this, too. the stories-within-a-story and dreamlike surreality of this really add to the fairytale quality. i like that it isn't tidy or straightforward

the product placement was pretty egregious but the story and tension here were REALLY good. genuinely unnerving villain. the final scene treads that horror/comedy sweet spot.
you only get one screencap and a vague impression because this one's really worth going into blind

my mom once asked my sister "do you ever think about the marching-on of time" apropos of nothing. that's this movie to me
if you've ever read richard mcguire's "here", that's also this movie to me

the ghosts of past relationships haunt a woman to the point where her -- and the viewer's -- perception of reality is challenged. the more i look back on this one, the more i realized i liked it. also, gorgeous irish countryside shots

eggers does it again. there are nods to human evil here like there are in the vvitch but i really wish this had more of the latter's sly ambiguity around it. so many ideas at play here but this cohered/was written well enough to be enjoyable. & also god damn. the VISUALS.

strong contender for a new favorite... i'm weak to stories about kids who, for better/worse, realize their parents are people, and this really hit home for me; i, too, grew up lonely and close to my mom & her many partners. the sparse dialogue and slow pacing really make this.

i've always enjoyed anderson's artistry but what really made this for me were the details from his own childhood (the noye's fludde play, the troubled kid book, his own parents' dissolving marriage echoed in the bishops, etc), those grounded this & gave it a human warmth
