I have updated my ‘interesting HE folks’ starter pack on the request of a few people. If I missed you off (or someone else you think has interesting things to say on HE) give me a friendly prod and I will add you in / update again. go.bsky.app/MmHk4p7
Down down, you bring me down
I hear you knocking at my door and i can’t sleep at night
Your face, it has no place
No room for you inside my house i need to be alone

Don’t waste your words i don’t need anything from you
I don’t care where you’ve been or what you plan to do.

What’s the best we can hope for from next weeks Budget? There’s (understandably) lots of gloom & no sign of ‘headroom’. I wonder if the best hope is a gentle balance of more modest tax and cuts than feared with some modest improvements to tax as some new elements are established and others ended.

I can confirm train stations at 5.30am are cold. I’m only just starting to feel my cheeks again.

I think the HE pitch to the world should be that universities teach people to disagree constructively, to help seek and tell truth, & to connect together communities.

These activities have long existed in the sector but we need to double down on them, proudly so. They are deeply relevant to now.

Very interesting perspective from Jonathan Becker that European Higher Education focuses to exclusively on academic development and attainment as the success metric for students and universities and insufficient on the emotional development and societal impact of graduates and research. #MCO2020

Killer stat; 61% drop in interest in studying masters degrees in the US since Trump took office.

Good to hear a panel at the Magna Charter Observatory conference talk about the role of students in living values, academic freedom and HE governance globally. The students talked about having a seat at the table being important but not a means unto itself.

But Nick Mohammed’s reaction was incredible. He’s the most lovely chap ever.

Just rewatched ep 8 series 3, an episode which, among other things, focuses on father & daughter trying to grieve the loss of the mother. It’s an incredible piece of TV. Painfully uncomfortable to watch as grief & self destructive behaviour eats away at their individual beings & their relationships.
I loved Finish thriller Bordertown series 1 and 2 and just finished series 3. Even bleaker than those before with all the major characters broken and perhaps the only mentally strong character the wife who dies in a really moving episode 1. Highly recommended viewing. 9/10

Walle man of the match for me for Ipswich. He doesn’t have the flair of Philogene or Clarke but does pose a frequent threat but with balls in, rather than runs in, to the opposition box. He deserved someone nailing at least one of his balls in from the wing tonight. I wanted a win but lots to like.

Walle has played some really great balls in from the wing for ITFC this evening. None have connected so far but they will do in time. He’s going to gradually grow into an exceptional player.

Absolutely brilliant move for ITFC’s equaliser. Really class response to Watford goal.

A great case study of collaboration. Universities of Aberystwyth & Bangor are proposing a new, joint dental school. Working together on a partnership that spreads & reduces risk, retains individual identity and creates an important and high value public benefit. www.aber.ac.uk/en/news/arch...

Update; now on a train where I’m stood with 8 other people and a dog in the vestibule. Rather hoping I might be able to grab a seat at some stage in the next 3 hours.

Ipswich town ready to go on a run now. Took a while but there’s plenty of time left for action this season.

Breaking the away games ho-do in style ITFC now enjoying themselves banging in 4 away. Great to see Nunez get on the score sheet (twice) and perhaps this is a key turning point for Ipswich?

Good fun to read a humorous critique of the (perennial) attack on the quality of HE albeit it’s unfair in implying students are seeking a way to be well funded and have an easy life in the final line or 2.

The weekends foreign language TV series thriller was Dutch Incognito. Slick, modern, sometimes working to hard to be clever but with a decent plot line and some likable characters (as well as some enjoyably unlikable characters). A few too many cliches let it down. 6/10

Not a storming win but ITFC looked more patient & disciplined today. My brother (not an ITFC fan but a big football fan) said ITFC are team with some really good championship players who need to stop thinking they are premier players so they can play at their level. He’s bang on.
