Modern flat design is thusly more uniform, with large swaths of single colors. It’s a screen, not a page, so let’s take advantage of the form. You see more motion and more depth. Futuristic, like Minority Report UI.

I think flat design of the last 10 years was largely a reaction to skeuomorphism, i.e. mimicking the form of real objects to afford the user obvious cues for usability. Early web was limited by what the browser could render and was more akin to old school publishing—no z-axis. Old school “flat.”
