Are there any studies on melanosomes in bird scales? I can’t find any in a quick search. I feel like that would be a better comparison than feathers; maybe an in depth study comparing many different color scales from birds and crocodilians could be used as a base guide for dino scale predictions.

I agree, gray head and gray tail with black terminal band makes me think this is intended to be a Common kestrel.
