Greg Girard's neon nighttime photographs of '70s & '80s Hong Kong
bar interior, Hong Kong, 1985. there's a squat, glowing jukebox at the back of the room, at the center of the image, which casts light in front of it on the parquet flooring. the bar is painted pale pink on the top half, and red and green on the bottom. on the right, there's a darkened doorframe, on the left there's a little table surrounded by chairs with (what looks like) pink velvet backs. paintings on the wall: a couple of landscapes, the one on the left is much easier to see: a body of water surrounded by trees and a little gazebo. painting above the jukebox is a nude woman standing at the edge of the sea. there's a vase with flowers on the floor next to the jukebox, maybe snapdragons. restaurant exterior at night, sign above it reads 'Plaza Grill & Wine' in white neon lights. a man in a white shirt and black bowtie sits outside. the neons at the center of the frame darken at the left edge where a taxi is only barely visible thanks to its lights and the neon lights reflecting on its exterior exteriors of restaurants at night - biggest sign is rectangular with pink neon outline, reads "2 DRAGONS BAR RESTAURANT" in bluish white and pink neon lettering. there are 2 more signs, one printed and one pink neon. looks like there's an almost sculptural looking dragon along the front of the building. other signs visible read "See Beauty House" and "Seoul Palace Restaurant: Delicious Korean Food." 2 cars at the bottom of the frame with neon lights reflected along their exteriors/windows. Kai Tak airport and surroundings, with HK Island in background - looks like it might be dusk, skyscrapers are at the front of the image, airport is center, both lit up with tiny green lights. the skyline in the background is dusty pink.

Picked up this little book of writers’ writing rituals, & I think most of em are liars — “up at dawn, 6 hours at my desk, followed by calisthenics, liquor, & reading edifying works.” But David Lynch delivers the goods.
