ALSO, depending on how you want people to join, you can make a verification process like how one of my guild's does it. It's basically a Terms and Conditions. They also ask your pronouns as a way to weed out transphobes who complain about having to pick pronouns in order to join lol.

The discord servers I'm in often have some channel purposes in common, ie General chatting, food, pets, common interests/hobbies. Here's a good example from one server I'm in that I feel covers a lot of bases quite nicely. Hope this helps!
