I bought one of his books at MacLeod’s a long time ago when I was looking for Canadian authors. His palatable storyteller writing style undersells the heavier, often tragic, plots.

Dr Stephen Novotny, played by Walter Brennan, is questioned and arrested by Occupational Police in his Czechoslovakian home. The shot frames the police officer's back so he takes up the entire scene while he looks upon the victimized group of Czech men. As Dr Novotny faces his death, we are given a scene where he paces his cell while the camera zooms in on his face. He offers a speech to be passed on to his son: "What I now want to say to you my son, is meant for when you are a grown man. The now mighty invaders will have been thrown out of our land for quite some time. I hope you live in a free land where the people are truly governed by themselves and for themselves. Those will be great days to live, in a land where all the men and women and children will have good food to eat, and time to read and to think, to talk things over with one another for their own good. When such great days do come don't forget that freedom is not something that one possesses, like a hat or a piece of candy, the real thing is fighting for freedom and you might remember me not because I have been your father but because I have died in this great fight." As Mascha faces the oppression of the Gestapo, stark scene like this silhouette of prison bars are used expertly by director Fritz Lang. A Gestapo officer revels with glee as he squeezes information out of helpless Czech citizens.
