I think it was purely down to attitude and how Pickens had previously handled himself. Extremely talented, but lacking maturity in some areas.

Sure, but you still need to be held accountable when you cross a line such as spitting in someone else's face. Accept the punishment and hope that it deters others from crossing that line in the future

Spitting on someone is assault, and it's also gross and unprofessional. They should probably also consider that Chase lied about doing it, instead of owning his actions
