There is no ethical use of AI because the continued existence of the AI industry is directly harmful to (alongside everyone else) the interests of everyone whose labour makes books exist—writers of fiction & nonfiction, illustrators, translators, researchers, editors, everyone.

Yeah and the whole film is like that, really. It’s all the standard blockbuster tricks repeated, devoid of content, in a way that makes them very hard to miss. It feels like a kind of ’emperor has no clothes’ moment for the genre, in a way.

I also have an unsubstantiated and probably entirely wrong pet theory that Rise of Skywalker coming out the same year and very obviously doing all the standard blockbuster beats as part of a very poorly constructed story took the wind out of the sales of that entire mode of storytelling.

I think a large part of that is downstream of the more iconic parts of the franchise ending in 2019. It’s a bit past-its-time, at this point.
