I recall (15+ years ago) it was well received in cases where the OP wanted to be consistently identified in a thread, an AMA or challenge or something, and then forgotten once the thread faded away. Someone trying to hold An Identity across time and space was cringe

TV feature that smooths out the visuals between frames. Pretty cool for watching sports, but on filmsand TV it looks horrendous. Some people don't notice a difference, but if you've ever walked through a TV section at the store and felt like some screens looked uncanny, that's motion smoothing

Granted, I've read Odyssey myself (my reply was rhetorical) and I haven't seen the spoiler anger you're talking about, so maybe there's some context that I'm missing. But I think we should culturally err toward preserving Fresh Experiences for new humans

True, but there can still be a joy to experiencing the story for the first time (including the tropes and themes that you are familiar with from modern media) that kind of gets lost if everyone goes "oh a new movie is coming out? Let's talk openly and flippantly about specific plot details!"
