Also raises the issue of 'accountants' versus 'tax advisers'. Not all accountants are qualified in tax and not all tax advisers are qualified in accountancy. The man on the street doesn't always appreciate the difference and assumes an accountant is the person to go to with a tax matter.

From my experience non-tax specialists don't know what they don't know and tend to assume what they postulate is correct. Whereas tax specialists may not know the answer, but have an awareness of cross-tax risks, and know where to go to find the answer.
