I'M NOT LOYAL TO ANYBODY, I'M A DEMON
I HAVE NO LOYALTY FOR ANYONE, NEVER DID, NEVER WILL

Rooted in Stephen King's Thinner and the '08 housing collapse, Drag Me To Hell pulls no punches. The film casts the evil eye on the engines of collapse just stirring to life when the film released. 16 years later and we're all under the curse.
Unless something changes, we're all gonna burn.

Christine's a terrible person, but her projected innocence and desperation play our sympathies. It draws on culturally instilled responses and patronizing notions of guiltless white women. No fault of their own.
A veil of tears to wash away blood and blame.
Ask Sam Hose how he feels about that.

She just has to disturb the eternal rest of the old woman who laid the curse on her.
Unfortunate.
But Christine will do anything to get what's hers, even digging up a grave in a rainstorm.

She loses a button but gets a curse. She seeks help from her boyfriend, a medium, a curandera, and there's a chance of escaping her infernal fate.

Christine gets jumped by the elderly woman in her car in a well choreographed fight scene threading the needle between slapstick and brutality. This is Sam Raimi after all.

Jump forward 40 years and we meet Christine - a mortgage officer eager for promotion. To put herself ahead in the man dominated office, she "makes a hard choice" and shows no mercy to an old woman begging for a scrap of grace. This performative aggression/discipline dooms her.

In 1969 LA, we see the brief introduction to the film's premise of a revenge-fueled Romani curse, a demon, and being dragged to Hell. Also the impotence of mediums.
The opening credits cover the curse's rules - most importantly the 3 day timeline from being cursed to sent below.

The #hauntalong winds down. The lights dim and the fundament cracks as I talk about Drag Me To Hell....

If you're looking for a Gothic simmering with atmosphere and tragedy, 'The Vourdalak' has it in spades.

ALSO - Gorcha is a human sized marionette and his herky-jerky movement heightens the ill feeling. Red-mouthed history stumbling on strings to eat you.

Power thrives on exclusion. Its hunger bottomless. It uses every lever to sustain and grow its influence over others.
Love
Death
Momentary kindness

Like Gorcha, those enthralled often prey on those closest. And these victims scrape their own power from it. Because the cruelty must have a point.

The eldest daughter, the youngest son, and the Marquis initially attempt to fight back against the monster among them.
But the trio's efforts born from womanly wisdom break against patriarchy's entrenched power. Both Jegor and Gorcha unleash raw violence to maintain their authority.

"Love is a poison in this land"
The ties that bind form invisibly nooses, strangling the family's resolve. To act is a betrayal. Of their closest loves. Of their father. Of their world.
All they can do is hug their destruction close and bleed.
Bleed into the dead's open mouths.

Bound by love
Paralyzed by fear
Blinded by ignorance
The family cannot save themselves.
Starting with the grandchild, Gorcha feasts on each of them.

If he returns, he will be a vourdalak and none should let him in.
Unfortunately for everyone in his house, Gorcha returns.

There the Marquis finds the Gorcha family, sans Gorcha the patriarch and his eldest son, Jegor. Shortly Jegor turns up with ill tidings: after a month seeking revenge on the the Turk, he failed. Gorcha continues the hunt and should die fighting.

In 18th century Eastern Europe (somewhere around Romania), French Marquis Jacques Saturnin du Antoine loses his companions and horse due to banditry in an ugly storm. A local directs him to the house of Gorcha.
There, our Marquis can find a horse and shelter.

Lorn Song and Necropolis are my go to answers. Lorn Song is more manageable but Necropolis is more open-ended.
