City manager Ferguson has decided to not propose an expansion of the HEART non-violent response program to 24/7 service, instead opting to enhance the current dayside hour service.

Ferguson noted that current HEART cannot meet all the dayside calls for service.

BREAKING: Durham County Manager Claudia Hager is proposing a property tax rate of 55.42 cents. This rate is cents above the revenue neutral rate of 51.92 cents per $100 valuation.

Tonight Durham county residents will learn the proposed budget for the county

After tonight, county commissioners will hold several work sessions to fine tune the budget.

The city will also be releasing their proposed budget in the coming weeks.

Low end estimate of remediation costs are $11 million.

Currently, the city is waiting for the NC Department of Environmental Quality to finish final testing. The city estimates the state’s work will finish near the end of the calendar year. THEN the city can start planning for actual remediation.

Bills to limit HOAs authority are making their way through the NC General Assembly.

One version would ban HOAs from initiating foreclosure proceedings just for fines. The other version would make HOAs wait at least 6 months before initiating foreclosure.

Cuts are coming to Durham Public Schools.

During Thursday's Board of Education meeting, district leadership presented a plan to cut 27 classified positions effective 7/1. The district would save around $2 million.

A trial panel of 2 Republican and 1 Democratic judge ruled 2-1 today that the General Assembly violated the constitution when they stripped Governors of the power to appoint members of the state Board of Elections.

Late last year the General Assembly moved that power to the state auditor.

The more conservative of the two state Houses are pushing for quick passage of their version of the budget this week.

The budget contains cuts to vacant positions, several programs and the community college system.

But the order would likely cease grants to drinking water systems to maintain/upgrade their fluoridation systems.

It would also remove a key justification some jurisdictions relied on to continue their fluoridation programs.

If this is affirmed by the state Supreme Court, up to 60,000 voters will need to “cure” their ballots within 15 days. Voters who did not cure their ballots by that time will see their votes discarded.

Currently, "multiple county ranger and forest fire equipment operator jobs — [are] all on pay scales starting below $38,000 — as well as a firefighting helicopter pilot job, with pay starting at $61,000."

According to surveys, Arizona's DMV is ranked 4th best, and NC is in the middle of the pack at 25th.

Republican lawmakers have been loath to put more money into the DMV system.
