For one of my 30 Days Wild challenges (The Wildlife Trusts' annual challenge event) today I set off on a Wetland Bird Survey 🐦

This voluntary survey is a great thing to get involved with if you have the time and ability to do so!

I never fail to find something new when I go out in nature 🌿

In a few months I start a new job as a nature reserve intern so in the meantime, I'm brushing up on my invert ID skills🪲

news just in!! meet the beetle who never skips leg day 🦵

the swollen-thighed beetle! 🪲
(Oedemera nobilis)

found in western Europe, the males of this species have really thick thighs and you'll often find them on open-faced flowers like the oxeye daisy pictured on the left here

did you know that if you smell a gorse flower after it's been bathing in the warm, spring sun, you will be able to smell the distinct scent of coconut 🥥?

today's selection of bryophytes!
(mosses and liverworts, see alt text for more info)

how do mosses reproduce?

through this little guy! they use what is called a sporophyte to release spores 👀 look closely and you can see the capsule at the top of the solitary stalk (seta) which is where the spores are. the capsules have a neat little lid too to control when they disperse spores

did you know: when gorse flowers are in the sun, they smell like coconut 🥥!

next time you're near some, give them a little sniff and think about a chilled, piña colada 🍹
