I'm hopeful that the talks in Türkiye between Washington and Tehran will reduce tensions in the Middle East and reduce the suffering of the Iranian people. But there's a reason the "Don't Touch My Boats" meme exists.

Jokes aside, 2 incidents involving Iran and American ships within a relatively short time of each other are not fun headlines to read. A Shahed-139 drone approaching the Aircraft Carrier USS Abraham Lincoln with “unclear” intent was shot down by an F-35C. The other incident involved two Iranian gunboats supported by a drone threatening to board and seize a US-flagged oil tanker. The guided missile destroyer USS McFaul responded immediately with defensive air support from the US Air Force, and the tanker was escorted safely, and the incident was de-escalated successfully. My hope is that this can be resolved peacefully, and at the time of posting this, President Trump is still set on talks with Tehran about a broader de-escalation of tensions. Here are a couple of examples of boats being the reason going to war. There are more I ran out of space. The British Royle Navy’s stopping of US shipping and seizure of cargo was a primary driver for the War of 1812 The sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbour in 1898 was blamed on a Spanish sea mine and was the spark that saw the start of the Spanish-American War The return of German unrestricted submarine warfare, sinking US ships, was one of the primary reasons Congress declared war on Germany in 1917. The Japanese attack on the US Navy at Pearl Harbour is the well-known reason that America joined World War II in 1941 The North Vietnamese attack on US Navy vessels in the Gulf of Tonkin served as justification for the massive military deployment in Vietnam 1964. This is purely conjecture, but the US has a history of going to war over boats, and a war would distract from some of the issues at home
