BONUS: The House of Ghosts (1907)

A wild six minute journey that packs a wide array of tricks and treats into its short runtime. I’m not only impressed at how much was done in the first few years of film, but by how well done it is too. A must for film freaks and/or horror nerds.

Hahaha. I can appreciate that though. It’s rare to find horror scary after seeing literally hundreds of movies though, so the art really is all there is for me.

13. Hell House LLC (2015)

Loved the faux-documentary style, which made it feel like a Travel Channel special I stumbled upon. It was believable without over-explaining anything — I can see that annoying some people, but I found it just right.

The fact that Bluesky is almost completely made up of unhinged takes like it’s barely 2009 is wild. Y’all are keeping Stevo happy

12. Lake of the Dead (1958)

Kind of a serious take on a Scooby Doo mystery, and I love that for me. It’s got just a pinch of paranormal seasoning, but is largely a straightforward mystery about paranoia and the fear of losing control.

BONUS: Million Dollar Crocodile (2012)

Bro, I’m putting this as a bonus because I just don’t want to take an official slot of the 100 days to Halloween with this garbage. It’s shrill, poorly dubbed, and barely a Killer Animal B-movie. Just awful.

11. The Invisible Man (1933)

It’s a fun and funny piece of horror history. Claude Rains is phenomenal in it, and racks up a kill count never before seen in Universal horror history. A nice bit of camp for a cold and windy night.

10. A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1989)

A fun and surprisingly inventive film for being so late in the franchise, but it feels the most distant of them so far. Crazy, unique kills and a Hellraiser-inspired production keeps this one afloat though.

9. Titanic 666 (2022)

Is this a work of art? No, not at all. But I have to say an effort is made and the acting is generally not bad! Some bonkers kills and an interesting (if hammy) seance plot makes this better than most no budget horror flicks out there.

BONUS: A White Spot in the Back of the Head (1979)

A heady little ghost story that really hits home the best kind of tragedy. The post-death motorcycle scene is worth hunting this one down — I watched it on the All the Haunts Be Ours collection from Severin.

I am not sure of the artist, but this might be my favorite Final Fantasy IX art ever. 🤩🥰

8. The Mummy (1999)

Hot take, but this is the best blockbuster ever made. Every minute of this movie still hits. Horror, action, comedy, adventure all blend seamlessly into the perfect popcorn romp.

7. Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984)

A cheeky parody that has shining moments but is bogged down considerably by too many characters and not enough insanity. There were some creative kills though and who doesn’t love Vincent Price playing a satanist?

6. Talk to Me (2022)

I love a good ghost story, and this is an incredible one. The rules felt consistent while still ramping up to an ending that is going to stick with me for ages. Talk to Me definitely joins the echelon of top tier A24 horror.

5. Black Dragons (1942)

A nonsensical plot without the reveal which comes in the last five minutes of the film. This one is for Lugosi completionists and is a quick glimpse into what would become the Red Scare a decade later — the horror that creeps amongst us.

4. M3GAN (2022)

This movie is going to climb the ladder of favorites steadily for the rest of my life. Absolutely iconic and what a hell of a time. M3GAN has the best hallway scene of the decade. The unrated cut changes JUST enough to be the definitive version.

3. Cube (1997)

Cube is a tight psychological description of what happens inside of Hellraiser’s Lament Configuration Box. Some hammy acting and 90s cgi really date this film something fierce, but a fun 90 minutes if you can forgive the obvious Guy Goes Crazy plot.

2. Scream 3 (2000)

You know what? Scream 3 is the best Scream movie. I understand the love for 1 & 2, and I appreciate the new success of 4-6, but 3 is the peak. This ages like the FINEST wine and is just as relevant today as it was 23 years ago.

1. Libido (1965)

A tight, pulpy, psychosexual drama that pulls from House on Haunted Hill and similar almost-ghost stories. The characters are well defined and memorable, and the tension resolves with a satisfying crescendo. Overall a great midnight watch.
