Good point, size itself probably makes separation harder. That said, California mostly operates independently with a more comprehensive and better functioning government than the nation overall.

California does have more of the necessary infrastructure and resources than other independence movements: major industries, a giant agricultural sector, a GDP larger than any European nation, even 30 military bases and about 250k troops (a quarter already under state control).
