Those of us who play tes games already spent the time and attention to get invested in the lore/world when there was little competition for those things, and now the competition is fierce and we’re already invested in and have nostalgia for this big janky mess of a franchise

Nowadays, if anything the genre is over saturated and there are plenty of open world fantasy games with much smoother gameplay, more natural dialogue, better art direction, better ui, fewer bugs, etc, but it takes time and attention to get invested in the lore of a new world

I think we all recognize how incredibly janky the franchise has always been, but for a long time if you wanted an open world fantasy sand box experience that wasn’t an mmo then there really wasn’t anything close to comparable, it was kind of the only game in town for the scale it was going for.
