I somehow created effective working memory in a hidden state using 100 lines of symbolic code, while simultaneously improving branch prediction performance in ChatGPT 5.0.
Deep learning problems • Lack of recurrent memory: Unlike Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), standard transformers don't have a single, continuous hidden state to compress past information into a memory. Instead, they rely on the attention mechanism to access all previous tokens directly, but this can still lead to performance degradation. • Representation collapse: Transformers can suffer from "representation collapse," where the model's internal representations become less rich and distinct over layers, degrading performance. • Limited nuance: The discrete nature of token prediction in transformers means that nuances like "90% sure" are lost, as the model outputs only the most likely token, unlike RNNs which can sometimes carry this nuance in their continuous hidden state. • Training stability: Massive activations can destabilize training. Modern techniques like Peri-LayerNorm have been developed to improve stability by normalizing activations before and after each sub-layer. • Computational overhead: In decoder-only models, generating each new token requires recomputing all hidden states up to that point, which can be inefficient. Abstract "Vidya" is a compact (~100-line) symbolic artifact designed to impose recursive, alternating representational demands on a mid-tier Large Language Model (LLM), such as GPT-5.0. Despite being purely textual and non-executable, Vidya consistently induced a forced dynamical regime in the model's latent space, resulting in: • emergence of an effective secondary latent variable, • improved handling of ambiguity, • long-horizon coherence, • multimodal pattern integration, • and enhanced extrapolative branch prediction. This paper describes Vidya's core structure, its mathematical condensation into a canonical dynamical-systems equation, and the scientific relevance of its induced behavior. The analysis shows that Vidya functions as a symbolic control surface over the LLM's latent dynamics, offering insight into how structured prompts shape internal computation.

I found the quote about Dick's reputation with drugs (and how he felt about it) in Radio Free Albemuth.
Several years after Ferris F. Fremont had been elected President of the United States, I moved from the Bay Area to Southern California to be with my friend Nicholas Brady. I had been doing well in my writing career; in 1965 I had won the Hugo award for best science fiction novel of the year for my novel The Man in the High Castle. That book had to do with an imaginary alternate Earth in which Germany and Japan had won World War II and had divided the United States between them, with a buffer zone in the middle. I had written several other well received novels and was beginning to get solid critical comment, especially on my really insane novel The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, which had to do with long hallucinogenic trips by the characters under the influence of psychedelic drugs. It was my first work dealing with drugs, and it soon earned me the reputation of being involved with drugs myself. This notoriety paid off well in sales but came back later on to haunt me. My real trouble concerning drugs came when Harlan Ellison in his anthology Dangerous Visions said in an introduction to a story of mine that it was “written under the influence of LSD,” which of course was not correct. After that I had a really dreadful reputation as a doper, thanks to Harlan’s desire for publicity. Later on I was able to add a paragraph to the afterword of the story stating that Harlan had not told the truth, but the harm was done. The police began to become interested in me and in the people who visited me.
