2025 has been a good year for our BBS coverage, but we can do better! 51 BBS and 7 Wetland BBS squares were surveyed, or 88% of our allocation, by 49 volunteers. A huge thank you to all of them.

Our updated header pic shows what may be the largest Lesser Black-backed Gull roost in the country, at #Ellesmere. So impressive, people stop their cars to enjoy the spectacle!

We have several vacant Wetland Bird Survey sites across Shropshire (three examples shown) and you only need basic wildfowl ID skills to join the team and start #YourWeBSJourney 🙂

Our autumn newsletter has just been sent to BTO members and supporters in Shropshire.

The "Birds of Shropshire by Habitat and Season" course group will be at #VenusPool next Sunday, 28th September, from 9.30am.

The reserve may be a bit busier than usual, please park neatly! 🙂

Essential conservation work will be carried out at #VenusPool on three consecutive days from 30 September to 1 October. This will inevitably cause disturbance, including in front of the hides.

Helpers welcome! Meet at 10 am with gardening gloves, loppers etc, appropriate clothing.

Several members of the @btobirds.bsky.social Regional Network enjoyed gathering at Brandon Marsh Nature Reserve (Warks WT) today for updates on surveys and a look forward to the next big project: Bird Atlas 2027–31!

Help to fill data gaps for bird populations outside the breeding season.

Able to identify the birds likely to be found in your chosen square.

At least two visits over this winter, preferably four.

Happy New WeBS Year! This Sunday's Core Count is the first of the 2025/26 year.

We always have space for new counters, you just need to be able to identify the waterbirds that regularly occur at your site.

Weekday maintenance works start at the Sinkers Fields NR, Whixall, on Friday 4 July and continue from Monday 7 July.

The hide will be open but access will be needed to the gates and there may be disturbance.

We have lots of unallocated Heathland Bird Survey squares in South Shropshire.

For us this is just a Nightjar survey, requiring two after sunset visits before 15 July.
