What is connectivity? It can take many forms:
Russia’s EAEU: security-first
China’s Belt and Road Initiative / Shanghai Cooperation Organisation: trade + influence
EU: values + critical resources
Türkiye: culture + commerce
SCCA navigate between offers, each with different costs and benefits.
July 29, 2025 at 8:26 AM
For the EU, SCCA makes up just 1.6% of trade, but it’s strategically important. Its biggest partners are:
Kazakhstan (46%)
Azerbaijan (38%)
Others (16%)
China and Russia are far more deeply involved in areas beyond trade, but the EU sees opportunity in energy and transit corridors.

At April’s EU–Central Asia Summit, EUCO’s Costa hailed a “new dimension” in ties, so how can the EU proceed?

And what do SCCA’s present connections look like?

Trade brings political closeness, but it shapes the field in other ways.

Result: €12B pledged under Global Gateway.

But “connectivity” here means more than wires + roads. It’s vital for overlapping regional spheres of influence. A 🧵
