I accept that Finn’s and Finnish civil society paid a price. But judged by results given Finland’s position and resources, the policy always struck me as nearly a work of art. What was the great other policy they could have gone for. They had to set their course years before NATO even existed.

It is for Finns to judge if Finlandization was good, bad, or complicated, not me as an American. But it seems to me it should be compared to available alternatives, and judged wrt Finland’s geography, resources, and power.

A fair point, but still, if he stays on the bench, he'd get cases off the wheel and could hold the line there. An elderly retired judge with no official powers is just powerless. His new bold public statements will just get muttered agreement from those who already know and be ignored by the rest.
