Another 8 copies of "A Field Guide to Grad School" were dropped in the mail today bringing the total to 836! This endeavor started in 2020 and I haven't given up on reaching my goal of 1,000 since! I'm eager to reach all 50 states and still need: AK, ME, NE, ND, SD, VT, WV, and WY. Can you help?

It’s my first first day of school without Henry in 13 years…I suppose this mug will do (generously gifted to me by a former UChicago research assistant, featuring Henry at his first Stony Brook baseball game).

The last 3 books for the academic year are on their way to prospective/current PhD students! This brings the total # of books provided to 828 (at least!). Many thanks to Barb Tonetti and @princetonupress.bsky.social for being wonderful partners in this endeavor. Time to buy more books!

Grateful to be a part of the Inclusive Academy Symposium this week at Princeton. It’s now more important than ever to (re)commit to priorities aligned w/diversifying sci and redressing inequities. Today, I was fortunate to share my thinking on the hidden curriculum (work with @tissyana.bsky.social).

It actually doesn't make sense: "NSF's broadening participation activities, including activities undertaken in fulfillment of the Broader Impacts criterion, and research on broadening participation, must aim to create opportunities for all Americans everywhere."

Today, I had to say goodbye to my best friend, Henry. The pain is indescribable. Dogs are incredible creatures I’m not sure humans deserve.

A bright spot: My research assistants making sun catchers with kids and talking to them (and their families) about our science.

5 more copies of A Field Guide to Grad School going out this weekend. It may seem futile but we must persist.

The NYC @standupforscience.bsky.social rally was 99% organized by grad students & postdocs. Without new folks, younger folks bringing their ideas & momentum to the forefront, science will stagnate. I appreciate the inspiring examples they all set for me. I’m grateful to have learned from them.

✨NYC Stand Up for Science Rally: March 7 (12-3pm)✨ This event is a call to protect publicly funded science from political interference and to reaffirm that diversity, equity, inclusion, and access are essential to scientific progress. @standupforscience.bsky.social (permit pending for location)

Dogs shouldn’t get old…or at least they shouldn’t experience pain with old age. I’m glad I got to take Henry on his (likely) last proper walk (I just didn’t know it was at the time). With a pinched nerve and advanced hip dysplasia, he is a proper couch potato now.

My copy of Ewing’s “Original Sins” should arrive this week! Anyone in the NYC area planning to go to her reading/discussion in March? Grateful to have something to look forward to.

The @spspnews.bsky.social Origins of the Social Mind preconf is 19 days away! This year, our guiding theme is "Understanding the building blocks of social group dynamics." This topic is so important & we're learning from THE experts (look at the lineup!). I believe in this precon so much that...1/2

When we think about impact and putting our findings to work in the "real world", it can be hard to know what to do in practice. ✨So, as a first step, my RAs and I are hosting the CCBL's first caregiver-child workshop about money tomorrow! Wish us luck!✨
