It's about the discovery that the world is running out of a particular fundamental resource.

“Now look,” she said, taking control of the left player and entered the hut. Dust motes swirled in slanted sunbeams from the lone grimy window. A single chair sat beneath a cobwebbed joist. She climbed onto the chair, pulled out the build menu and built a ladder from stones in her inventory. A net hung crookedly on a nail. She snagged it, cast it over the ladder’s top rungs. Finally, she crafted a white pebble which she immediately threw in a hole on the chair. The interior of the cabin dissolved into a vast, impossibly smooth wooden board. Black lines etched themselves into a grid across its surface. Stones of every colour sat poised at their intersections. The castle’s courtyard had vanished; on the right, a different section of the same board now sprawled, its stones arranged in a stark, geometric dance. “Like it?” Yhiwotdar beamed, utterly unbothered by the two men staring like they’d been handed a live octopus. “I created that rule. Took bloody ages.” “Is this a… Go board?” Ikaris asked. The words felt clumsy, alien in his mouth. What the hell. It’s the most complex transformation I’ve ever seen, he thought, and I’ve seen the engine render a snowflake in 127,000 shades of olo. It wasn’t that Yhiwotdar had recreated the Japanese board game in 箱!World, but rather 箱!World itself became the game of Go. This was a game doing things no game should do. “Yep. An infinite Go board. With as many colours as there are players.” “But why— OK. So the adaptive encoding works?” Ikaris was confused. He stole a look at Hiden and saw nothing but proud beaming of a parent watching their prodigious three-year-old master the timing of a quick-time event. “For this transformation, yes. The controls were encoded in the chair, ladder and net. When transformed into the Go board, they are converted into this pattern over here.” Yhiwotdar directed their attention to the top right corner of the left window. A collection of black and white stones were arranged in a peculiar pattern of concentric walls of white stones and black stones surrounding one another. Yhiwotdar took control of the right player and navigated to the same patch of the board as the left player. Then, taking turns as right and left players, she expertly placed black and white stones. First a group of five white stones were captured. Then after several moves, two black stones fell. As she posed to place the last white stone as a throw-in, Hiden asked, “Wait, is this one of the eternal life ko things?” “Er, could be?” she said shrugging. “I don’t actually play Go.” Hiden nodded knowingly and explained, “A ko is a pattern that repeats itself. The pattern on the board. It’s the same as before she started making all the moves.” Of course he knows it, the smug bastard, Ikaris thought. And of course she’s a suck up. Shame she’s legit talented. Click. Yhiwotdar placed a black stone, capturing the white throw-in. The stones settled. A single breath on the screen. And the scene on both windows restored themselves to the lakeside cabin once more.

Here's what the first few described moves show (aliens are black) - the white stone circled in red is where I'd play next. FWIW, first move at tengen is a supremely bad move.

Did I mention how much I love using #emacs for #writing prose? Wanted to export a version of my #scifi short story without the fancy cultural trappings of strange symbols. So I wrote a small bit of code, et voila!

I damn near spat out my coffee at the 21-ish minute mark at @acollierastro.bsky.social 's latest video as crazy emails from vibe physics was a since-removed plot point from my latest short story (the convo below is a vestige of said plot point)
Yoshiko had been amused at first, but her amusement soon turned to annoyance. “Don’t you have better things to do?” she asked. “Go make some new games!” Hiden would love to make new games. The only problem: his brain didn’t seem to have the capacity for generating new ideas anymore. This dearth of ideas wasn’t new— part of the reason why he had pitched Tsubitsu!World was his hope that a smallish, narratively light game would jog some of his brain cells into becoming more creative. Look how that turned out. “Is there any point, when the universe is running out of bits?” he asked. “It’s now in the low 11-digit range you know.” “There’s a good chance you’ll be long dead before the universe runs out of bits,” Yoshiko replied. Something in her voice hinted at an unsurety. Hiden pounced on that immediately, “You’re telling yourself, or telling me?” “Mostly you. You can’t be trolling the forums all day. You know the amount of queries the physics department received has more than doubled? And the creepy kooks who vibe physics’d a theory of everything despite not having a physics education? They’re now in my inbox more than anything.” “How’s that my fault?” “Well, if you didn’t egg them on, they wouldn’t be sending inane theories to physics conferences around the world. It’s bad enough we have AI slop papers. Now we have to deal with crackpot papers too.” “Oh, I’m sorry,” Hiden said softly. Looking across his desk, he noticed Yoshiko’s furrowed brow. “Whatcha working on?” She closed her laptop lid, removed her glasses and rubbed her eyes, replying, “Ironically, your H_ArbourBridge() problem. The crazies have bugged us so much that ISRQI has decided to colocate with PLanQC on a special session andworkshop on the topic of computing the bits of the universe early next year. I address this in my fiction novel, Diagonalization of the Meta. Plot twist: language is in fact conscious and has been in a long-protracted war using humans, language models and other tools to enact its will.
The spiritual sequel to this book, Mode Collapse explores more of this idea.
“The underlying dataset is written language on the Internet. The written language is generated by linguistic rules and vocabulary, which are largely determined by human society. We say that a language model learns the linguistic rules and vocbulary, and generates sentences in a language. That’s what a language model does — it models languages. So, if you are saying a language model is conscious, you are also saying language itself is conscious.” The music stopped just as a waitress arrived with the hot chips for the table. Mort and Zelotes found the same chip, and Mort let him have it. Mort took a different chip, dipped it in sweet chilli and sour cream and took a bite. Another call from Alex. Another rejection. Another questioning look from Zach. Mort pocketed his phone. “Languages being conscious — strange concept,” murmured Zach.

He picked up a particularly harmless looking gun from the display shelf, pressed a button at the side, whereupon a shiny blade slid out from the nozzle of the gun with a sharp schiing. He prodded the sharp metal tip, “I prefer the game’s sound effect.” “The next one over there has onboard sound and rumble effects. If there are batteries in it. A fan made the one you’re holding, and I really like it. The level of artistry and expertise that went into it far outstrips the commercially produced one.” Ikaris retracted the blade and replaced the model gun on the display shelf. “Mad Cricket, right? Shame Vapor Spy killed him—” “Most players couldn’t wait a week so they kill Mad Cricket. In the canonical version of the story, Mad Cricket commits suicide after waiting seven days in real time for Vapor Spy’s response. He couldn’t convince Vapor Spy that they’re both game characters. And the burden of knowledge was too much to bear—” “See, that’s what I’m talking about. How bout this: add a story element in To Bits World—
