Optical images from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) are amazing, ... so much happening in the galaxy group. Exploring the sky never gets boring 🤩 #extragalactic #AstroSci #astronomy #galaxies

Wow 😮 ... lots going on here. Stellar shells and tails around IC 3091, clearly a galaxy merger in progress. #astronomy #AstroSci #extragalactic

The radio core is indeed at the location of the optical galaxy. One-sided cometary radio tails - here twisted like a corkscrew - form when the galaxy ploughs through the intracluster medium. The bubble-shaped old part of the tail is likely the result of a head-on collision with a shock front.

Who likes Giant Radio Galaxies (GRGs) ? Here my latest ASKAP collection (incl. two candidates), all larger than 1 Mpc with angular sizes >5 arcmin. It's a zoo !! Paper ready for submission, comments welcome. #radioastronomy #extragalactic #astronomy #galaxies

Another stunning image from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) DR10 release. This is NGC 4495 which is surrounded by numerous spokes and shells appearing like a faint but sharply defined halo. Looks like multiple "umbrellas" from galaxy merger events. #astronomy #extragalactic

Faint stellar tails / bridges / filaments in the NGC 128 galaxy group as revealed in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) DR10, overexposed here to highlight stars outside the galaxy disks. These galaxies are interacting, and NGC 128 is counter-rotating (Chung+ 2012). #astronomy #extragalactic

Three of the spiral galaxies shown are part of the famous Grus Quartet which is rich in neutral hydrogen gas (black and blue contours from ATCA and Parkes, respectively). Hydrogen bridges between galaxies as well as tidal tails highlight their interaction history.

4/5 GALEX ultra-violet (UV) data show star formation (SF) in the disk of M83 as well as its outskirts. These types of large UV-disks are referred as XUV disks, where dense clumps of neutral hydrogen pinpoint SF in the disk outskirts. #astronomy #extragalactic #radioastronomy

3/5 The hydrogen envelope of spiral galaxies typically extends well beyond their stellar disks. M83 is a great example of this as shown below. There is a lot happening in the outer HI disk, likely evidence of interactions with neighbours. #radioastronomy #extragalactic #astronomy #spiral #galaxies

2/5 Deep optical images of M83 (NGC 5236) by Robert Gendler (left) and David Malin (right, 1987) reveal the faint stellar light including a southern spur and northern stream. The latter is likely an accreted dwarf galaxy. * David Malin's image archive: images.datacentral.org.au/malin/DEEP/153

The hydrogen disk of NGC 300 extends much beyond its bright stellar disk as is typical for spiral galaxies. The gas kinematics allow us to model the disk and determine its dark matter content. - For more info see the "Local Volume HI Survey" (LVHIS) pages: www.atnf.csiro.au/research/LVH...
