In 1949, the townsfolk of of McMinnville, OR, sent their "Grand Champion" turkey, as a goodwill ambassador, to Ismet Inonu, the then president of Turkey, for him to celebrate the Thanksgiving with the American people. This is hilarious :))

Mehmet Köksal, son of Yakup, from Meliki, a village in Tarsus, where St. Paul is from by the way, sent a letter, the tone of which is very convivial, to President Truman in 1946 and it made it all the way to its addressee apparently. The letter starts with, "My dear brother Truman," :)

I read this as "Musevileri ve şibh-i Musevileri", but I've never seen a phrase like "şibh-i [a religious community]" before. I'm also tempted to read it as "şu'be-i Musevileri" however the letter ع is missing there, and even if it's a typo, the whole phrase becomes meaningless. #Ottomansky ??

A news excerpt from the semi-official Ulus on the Turkish aid to Greece, which was in the throes of starvation during the WWII (Μεγάλος Λιμός). People were literally dropping in the streets of Athens due to lack of basic food items.

Even though the title “reis” (adopted from the Arabic ra’is) is conventionally reserved for nationalist leaders of all ranks in Turkey, Erdogan faithfuls have enthusiastically been using it for their leader since twenty some years ago when he was given the reins of the government in the country.
