I always talk about the limit as x —> a as what the function looks like it’s going to do and f(a) as what the function actually does. Then a continuous function is one that does what it looks like it’s going to do.

I’m fine with that characterization. That’s the way they grow. Squares, however, don’t have a natural orientation.
