There are many differences in the U.S. & U.K.'s legal system & decisions. In 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that discrimination based on gender identity qualifies as sex discrimination in Bostock v. Clayton County, a decision numerous lower courts reaffirmed.

In a devastating decision, the United Kingdom’s Supreme Court has ruled that trans women are ineligible for protections as women under their 2010 Equality Act.

While this is a heartbreaking decision, the Court affirmed that trans people are protected under many of the U.K.’s nondiscrimination laws.

Today is the anniversary of the start of the 504 sit-in, a historic protest that helped win disability protections!

Today is the anniversary of the start of the 504 sit-in. On April 5th, 1977, disabled activists led sit-ins at Housing, Education, and Welfare (HEW) buildings across the country. They were calling for the government to implement Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Section 504 was the first federal civil rights law that was passed to protect people with disabilities. It said that programs that receive federal funding cannot discriminate against disabled people. For years after the Rehabilitation Act was passed, the government delayed enacting section 504. Protesters entering the HEW building. Text reads: Most of the sit-ins didn’t last much longer than a day, but in San Francisco, protesters occupied the HEW building for 26 days. The San Francisco 504 sit-in was successful because they had community support and cross-movement solidarity. Organizations like the Black Panthers helped support the disabled protesters, providing food and supplies to ensure their safety and success. Brad Lomax was a Black wheelchair user with multiple sclerosis who was involved in disability rights movement activism and racial justice activism. He was a member of the Black Panther Party, a group who worked in the 1960s-1980s to promote Black Power and liberation. As a disabled, Black activist, he was able to build connections between the Black Panthers and disability rights organizing. The 504 sit-ins successfully won the implementation of Section 504. abled people: We must make sure people are actually disabled before we give them disability money. abled people: we shall make it very rigorous, require a lot of effort on their part to prove that they're disabled abled people: effort that disabled people may not even be able to accomplish due to their disabilities. abled people: this is a solid system, all the people who need the money are definitely getting it.
