My takeaway from class is that there are a lot of different ways to think about communication, underlying patterns that emerge from communication on every level, but it is up to us as individuals to adapt our own interpretations into skills that help us communicate more effectively. #UTcommtheory

My favorite theory is cognitive dissonance theory because it ousts any people who are too reluctant, living in their own ignorance. This theory shows how to avoid (selective exposure) and how to challenge these attitudes or beliefs (changing attitude or beliefs). #UTcommtheory

There is still agenda-setting being done in this digital age, but it happens differently now. It works by algorithms and code. People program codes, and those codes decide what content you get to see. They now gate keep our information. Being fed the same type of content gets boring. #UTcommtheory

The media is telling us to be concerned with this issue by publishing this story onto their front page, and are framing it in the context of "We don't know yet if he is as guilty as everybody says" even though there has been juries and judges who have found him guilty.

I have a parasocial relationship with Eminem. Growing up I used to listen to his "The Eminem Show" album on repeat. While I was just old enough to understand about 50% of his lyrics I knew he was incredibly talented. His music brings entertainment and solace into my life. #UTcommtheory

Netflix has become so much part of our culture that we even created slang for watching it: Netflix and chill. But beyond that, Netflix has brought real value to independent documentary makers by increasing their visibility, accessibility, and awareness. #UTcommtheory

AI has impacted my learning experience positively by helping me study for tests, prepare for interviews, refine my resume, and by minimizing the time I have to dedicate to menial tasks like formatting and spell-checks.

Often I am concerned with collapsing contexts while posting b/c of the trouble and grief my friends and family might give me for posting something they don't agree with. I cant post party pics bc of family, and ordinary family pics generate a false persona. Maybe it's best to not post. #UTcommtheory

I 've seen someone exhibit the Non-Assertive-Assimilation orientation; a new worker, barely speaks any English, tries to speak only English, is nice with everyone, never gets into arguments, and tries to be everyone's friend. It's an example of someone trying to assimilate passively. #UTcommtheory

The democratic style of decision making called Participation is the style I respond best to because I know my voice matters and has the ability to influence the decision at hand. Making decisions jointly collaborates different interests into the decision and best suits everyone. #UTcommtheory

I think the Disney corporation could use a cultural shift. Now movies and shows are just squeezed out for branding efforts instead of real creative story-telling. Public perception of Disney has turned negative because of political ideas, it should return to its roots: family centered. #UTcommtheory

Here's a syllogism to think about:
We have limited time here on earth.
Social media wastes time.
Therefore, social media wastes our life.

In the past I used to post some questionable activities on my snapchat. I would weigh the risk versus the reward of what I posted: making new friends versus getting in trouble by parents. I made my own rules for concealing and revealing what I was doing in my private life. #UTcommtheory

Leonard and Sheldon's friendship on The Big Bang Theory shows Certainty- Uncertainty, because Sheldon lives a uniform and controlled life, expecting his day to be the same for comfort. While Leonard doesn't have these expectations, everything he does seems to be unexpected to Sheldon. #UTcommtheory

A really relatable story about not following appropriate self-disclosure rules is while hanging out with a new friend and we just got done playing a game, he all of a sudden started trauma-dumping. I was speechless after his tale of a very hard life. I just didn't know what to say... #UTcommtheory

I grew up in a protective household. We had strict rules about bedtime, getting permission to visit friends, and had to ask before we left the house for anything. If we ever talked back about disagreeing with the rules we were punished. #UTcommtheory

I find the Phenomenological communication tradition to be very interesting because it holds puts an individual's story above all other communication "rules" and axioms. Being able to dive deep into a single communication situation and bring direct experience to it will reveal insights. #UTcommtheory

The criteria to evaluate an interpretive theory which statesthe theory may generate change is a very important criteria to pay attention to. As the practical utility amounts to using theory in real life for an objective theory, this criteria, enables theory to enact positive change. #UTcommtheory

The individuality of every communication experience or situation cannot be explained and predicted by the objective approach, it is much more useful to use an interpretive approach. One that considers the situation and context every time. #UTcommtheory
