In November 1978, the LDS Church recognized Jimmy Carter with the Family Unity Award. It was a transition moment in America—the Religious Right was already stirring, & the “family” became a divisive issue. Carter turned out to be the twelfth and final US president to speak in the Mormon Tabernacle.
