And Congress would be much more effective and able to pass laws safeguarding so much of what's been destroyed in the last year. Yes, there's risk but feel it's well worth the reward.

Not sure why you inferred that. Of course we're dealing in conjecture here, but no EC means no Trump in '16 and therefore quite unlikely he's even running in '24. My bet is that with a truly representative democracy it would be exceedingly rare to elect someone as despotic as Trump...

Thune wouldn't matter, in well-apportioned multi-member districts, it's unlikely MAGA would have a majority, and without the EC, unlikely Trump is even in office. But yes, I think this is overall better than our current system.

LOL fair, I don't think it's realistic in my lifetime but if we were starting from scratch...

Taxing the heck out of the rich and redistributing to protect non-workers with the understanding that even workers were and will be non-workers throughout their lives is good and we should do it more. I don't want less snap/wic/tanf; I want so much more.

There needs to be a concerted push to move to multi member proportionally representative districts. It would solve much of this problem in one swoop.

The real question is, is Gravity's Rainbow truly worth reading? Or is it another Finnegans Wake, forever doomed to be passed over on my bookshelf?

Many intelligent and well read people I know had never even heard of the guy!

Sure, but a bit short sighted to say it's basically worthless because of the current situation. It takes the commandeering of an entire political party to willingly do your dirty work in order to pull it off. For sure we need better safeguards but I don't think it invalidates the good either.

Though I'm curious how Canadian law would handle a batshit president pressuring a network to pull a late night host for an incredibly mild comment?

Best explanation so far, thank you. Having had the merits of the first amendment beaten into my brain for so long, this is an interesting perspective (and I'm half French but mostly lived here).
September 20, 2025 at 2:43 AM
Genuine question here - why would you not want the protections of the first amendment? Or is it that you don't care for how it applies here?

To be fair, current reality needs a serious upgrade.

It is cynicism if you're aware of the enormous bills Congress passed under Biden and still say they did "nothing". Couldn't agree more we need systemic change - those bills weren't enough. But time and idiotic centrists precluded that. We need much more when the left has material power again.

Cynicism isn't inherently a smarter position but that seems to drive a lot of this discourse. And as you point out, it's often just wrong!

If reframing clear DSA positions as "moderate" is the price to pay, I'm all in!

Hope this gives you some solace. Your tireless work throughout this primary was amazing to witness!

When did "per se" come to mean, "I'm obviously lying about this"?

I would like to understand if this correlation is linear before I have more kids 😅

Also, really need to reunify those Dakotas while we're at it.

I think it's fair to expect some backlash, but it's also silly to expect the same outcome in what's obviously a very different political environment. If anything, as you pointed out, the ACA has convinced most Americans of the positives of universal insurance.
