The American bison has always fascinated me. Several years ago, I attended the annual buffalo roundup in South Dakota's Black Hills. Despite being one of the coldest days on record, witnessing 1,300 bison moving across the plain was incredible.

After deciding my original idea wasn't working, I began adding more of a winter looking sky, and some bokeh circles began appearing. I liked this new direction and ended up removing most of the smoke. The painting now is more hopeful and serves to remind that we are guided by the same stars.

I've been painting birds for a long time, usually life-size. Recently, I wanted to capture a new energy by making the birds much larger and creating tension between finished and unfinished elements through different marks and line work.
