The stairs to climb up the tower (first pic) are these tiny, steep, spiraling stairways inside the turrets that sit at the 4 corners of the tower, shown in the second pic. That goes all the way to ground level, with various branch-offs and impossibly tiny doorways dotted up and down.

Did a guided climb of Chester Cathedral's central tower today - here's some bits you don't normally see!
1- inside the old belfry
2- view from belfry window over the nave
3- nave vaulting from the east window, ~75' above floor level
4- the space between the failing vault and the outer roof.

Today's cool things. Similar walk, more new things. Thanks to the Victorians, the stones lining the path in pic 4 appear to be stones originally from the rib-vaulting of the ruined east chancel of the former cathedral of St John (shown in pic 1).
