Image shows the removal of discolored varnish and repaint added during a past restoration. The repaint covered abrasion from an earlier cleaning.

Image shows the removal of repaint that was previously applied by a restorer to cover damage. You can see how the repaint covers original paint and changes the appearance of the painting. The original paint layer is to the left.

We are getting back up in the ceiling at St Mary’s of the Annunciation in Charleston SC in March. Cleaning paintings that were installed in the church mid 19th century then restored in early 20th. When restored they were repainted, we are removing the repaint getting back to the original painting.

An interesting article about a free woman of color living in 19th New Orleans. The original lace collar was painted out in the past to conceal her status it seems? I was able to remove the added paint layer revealing the original collar below. Historic New Orleans Collection “ Identity Theft”

Conserving this painting was a highlight of my career as a painting conservator. Many paintings are repainted to cover tears and paint loss however this was repainted to change the narrative. I’ve spent my career removing that repaint. The painting seems to be a metaphor for today don’t you think?
