And so we have a situation where the people's expected benefit from government is irrationally high, while their perceived return declines (or goes to "others"). All while they see themselves contributing more. It fucks up the social contract.

I think this is the core of the Dem failure. We champion the benefits of government, rightly increasing people's expectations of it, but failed to counter a bad-faith opposition which is insentivised to gum up the works bc it's the Dems left holding the bag when they get caught trying.
