Yes this is a very good point! Thinking defensively, I worry about how ones practice would be judged if someone aspirated with an LMA or under sedation given it is a known risk factor 🤷‍♂️

It is the diabetic patient requesting sedation for a short procedure, GA bad from an institutional and patient risk factor point of view. Do we have to say that sedation is not an option? Ask for a preop 24 hour liquid diet? I don’t have an answer, very curious what others are doing!

Yes gastric POCUS may have a role, definitely in ruling full stomach in. I agree for GAs a tube is needed, unless patients have been off them for 5 weeks (which no one is recommending anyway!).

Thanks Ed, I hadn’t thought about any impact in ICU. Gastric emptying of liquid is supposed to be preserved but I wonder if that applies to NG feed?

I was thinking more about elective cases scheduled under sedation e.g some opthalmic procedures. Would the options become GA with COETT or wide awake?
