The Athletic spoke with 10 people who have been part of LSU football in recent years and/or have worked for Kelly. What they described was a coach who delegated too much authority, didn’t care enough about recruiting and failed to bond with his players: www.nytimes.com/athletic/676...

Brian Kelly had won everywhere he’d coached. So why’d it go so bad at LSU? Reminded of what Charles Turner, who was LSU’s starting center in 2022 and ‘23, told me. He said he hardly any personal interactions in two seasons playing for Kelly... www.nytimes.com/athletic/594...

Texas is 116th in the country in 3rd-down efficiency (34%) and 86th in red zone touchdown percentage (59%). And now UT faces OU and the nation’s No. 1 defense. The good news? Arch is actually coming off his best game. Reporting with @ralphdrussoath.bsky.social: www.nytimes.com/athletic/670...

Could Arkansas really hire Bobby Petrino again?? www.nytimes.com/athletic/667...

Jonah Coleman’s one of the best RBs in college football. He also has a 3.93 GPA and is a semi finalist for the Campbell Trophy, the sport’s academic Heisman. The story of his bond with Jedd Fisch and his path to Washington is a fascinating one:

In August, I flew down to Tuscaloosa. I didn’t plan on doing a Ryan Williams story, but after being around him that day, I felt like I needed to write about Alabama’s ebullient star. He glows. I wondered—Why exactly is he this way? Turns out, there’s an amazing story behind it.

Sunday Read: Can anyone fix UCLA, a program once draped in glamour that has curdled into parody? The Bruins have had just one top 15 season in almost 30 years, play in a more than half-empty Rose Bowl, and are written off by its own alumni as a “sinking ship.”

“They’re unwilling to finance their expectations, and it’s been that way for some time.”
On the train wreck that is UCLA football.

JJ McCarthy now 16-0 as a starting QB since this moment. Not bad.

Sunday Read: “I called every (college coach) I knew and told them to recruit this kid.”

The recruiting process can be a baffling thing, and not just for players, but for coaches, too. John Mateer’s path to Oklahoma is one of the best examples of how nutty this all can get.

Unlike most high school QBs, John Mateer wasn’t active on the 7-on-7 circuit. He was busy playing baseball in the offseason. He didn’t think 7-on-7 mattered in recruiting, he told The Athletic.

Turns out, bring a multi-sports definitely helped Mateer: www.nytimes.com/athletic/659...

“Culture” may seem like bad cliche these days, but if you want to know why it matters and what it really means, Iowa State might be the best example in college football. The Cyclones had their best season ever in 2020. Two years later, they were 4-8.
September 5, 2025 at 1:26 PM
In 2020, Matt Campbell led Iowa State to its best season ever, finishing No. 9 in the nation. Two years later, ISU fell back to 4-8. The program’s culture had slipped. How’d the Cyclones get it back to win a program -best 11 games last season? The answer starts with this guy. (The little one.)

TCU had a heckuva time ruining Bill Belichick’s big debut at UNC on Monday night. The only one who might’ve had as much fun as the Horned Frog players in Chapel Hill was 32-yr-old Sam Lazarus. Armed with memes, one-liners & plenty of receipts, Lazarus and his team stole the show.

As TCU was dismantling UNC in Bill Belichick's big debut, it all felt kinda mind-blowing—and then, one other thought came to mind as the rout was on:

Why do we expect Alabama to be much better (and why we’re bullish on Ty Simpson); on a few head coaching candidates to keep in mind this year that AD will definitely be interested in; a breakout star at Miami; at A&M.

New Audible: @ralphdrussoath.bsky.social Stew & I discuss Lee Corso's impact on the sport and why he became a TV icon. Then, we dive into the controversy between Ohio State and Dave Portnoy; and predict our breakout stars for the upcoming weekend.

The hype around Arch Manning has been enormous. On Saturday at Ohio State, behind an O-line that will have four new starters, he gets first huge test in a 1 vs 2 showdown. What should you expect? @ralphdrussoath.bsky.social, Stew & I had a deep conversation about it on The Audible.

Sunday Read: If you coach your kid in youth sports, or are there watching every step, you know what a wild roller coaster ride that is. It’s human nature for them to compare themselves to others their age. And that’s not just a sports thing. That’s why you should hear Jalon Daniels story.

With the season about to kick off this weekend, I put together my 12-team bracket for exactly how I think the 2025 college football season and the Playoff will play out.

Since 2000, Oklahoma has won 11 or more games 16 times and had only two losing seasons. Both losing seasons have been with Brent Venables in charge. Just how hot is his seat heading in Year 4 at OU? We assess that, and the other Hot Seat coaches for 2025: www.nytimes.com/athletic/654...

Sunday Read: The 2025 Freaks List.
For years I’ve heard from NFL scouts and people who work inside the sport that this is the most insightful thing they read going into the college football season. It’s got everything from superstars at powerhouse programs to small college guys.

From Brandon Scherff to
Tristan Wirfs to Noah Fant to Riley Moss to Cooper DeJean, Iowa has a remarkable knack for finding—and developing—Freaks. This year we have three Hawkeyes on the Freaks List in the top 50 including two former three-star recruits.
