I wonder whether the government can continue
to pursue a European path for #Georgia while
becoming more authoritarian.

When the moment comes to decide
on #EU accession, I hope the decision
can be democratic and that
others accept #Georgia's decision.

Yet, Georgian government statements,
before and after the election, about
their progress towards EU membership,
remind me of some statements made by the then
government of Ukraine in the early 2010s.

In Britain, we would call some of the messaging
in #Georgia's election campaign as “project fear”.
I can’t blame anyone from wanting to avoid
a repeat of #Russia’s aggression against #Ukraine.

The joint observer statement about
the parliamentary elections in #Georgia
sums up what observer groups saw, including
good use of technology to allow smooth voting;
but:
it was not a fair
(in their words: “uneven”) contest.

I’m grateful to have been an observer
with the ODIHR/OSCE mission for
the parliamentary elections in #Georgia
that took place on 26 October.
It was a joy to return to such a lovely country.
