A silhouetted tree, with few leaves on it, at sunset. This photo, captured in the mid to late 80s, was taken on a Minolta X-700 with slide film. A red filter was placed over the lens and the original photo showed black where there is now white, and red where there is now pale blue. The dark blue in the image is the sun, which is setting. A white, horizontal line is a row of trees, across a river. The lone tree is at the near edge of the river, and there are stones that lead into the water, but appear as white blobs. To achieve this result, the slide was processed through a C-41 (negative print film) developer, which produced the negative appearance of the colours and silhouetted blackness. I used to work in a camera store that developed print film, and I asked the print technician to run my slide through their machine, to see what would result. This photo is the outcome.

Sail boats are moored in the small harbour town of Honfleur, in Normandy, France. Buildings on the opposite side of the harbour are mirrored on the still water, as are the clouds. On a historic note, Honfleur is where Samuel de Champlain set out for North America, in 1603. Five years later, he'd return and found Québec City. I visited Honfleur in 2014.

Valle Crucis Abbey is a thirteenth-century abbey, founded in 1201 by Prince Madog ap Gruffydd and the ‘white monks’ of the Cistercian order. It now lays in ruins in a valley, in northern Wales. This photo has been enhanced such that the sky has an orange glow and a touch of mist lies on a slope of a hill, in the background. This photo was originally shot in 1991 with a Minolta X-700 with a Minolta 50mm f/1.8 lens and Fuji 100 ASA slide film.

Rain clings to dirty glass of a bus shelter. The camera has focused on the rain drops that cling to the glass, causing the building in the background to be out of focus. Tomorrow marks the 7th anniversary of the reconstructive surgery on my left foot. My surgeon grafted bone from my hip onto one region that was suffering a degenerative condition, and he removed a joint that had severe osteoarthritis, replacing it with a plate and eight screws.

He saved my life.
