In North Carolina, barbecue is a noun, not a verb. However, it isn't a group of people, but the food itself. Burgers, dogs, chicken, steak...that's grilling. The group is a cook-out. Barbecue is pork (whole hog or shoulder) that is slow-cooked over coals with a vinegar-based sauce. That's BBQ!
